Are you looking for a creative idea for your New Jersey engagement photos? In my experience as a New Jersey photographer, people have the most fun doing activities they normally share with their partner. A favorite hobby can be an ideal way to spend your engagement session. For Bridget and Kyle, that meant boating in Medford Lakes. These engagement photos with a canoe and on the lakeshore are romantic and representative of their relationship.
Medford Lakes is a borough in Burlington Count, New Jersey. It’s near Mt. Laurel and only about a 45-minute drive from Center City Philadelphia. The Wharton State Forest sits to the west, giving the area a more rural feel. This part of New Jersey has so many beautiful parks and lakes.
A nonprofit organization called Medford Lakes Colony organizes activities in the area, including the annual Medford Lakes Canoe Carnival. People decorate canoes with lights and entire scenes. It’s worth a trip to see how creative people get with their boats.
For this Medford Lakes engagement session, we started out front of the Cathedral of the Woods. This historic landmark looks like a cross between a log cabin and a country church. It has a bell tower and single circular window above the door out front. The dark green doors and logs of the exterior almost make the church blend into the woods around it.
For their first look, Bridget and Kyle dressed in emerald green and browns. They looked right at home in front of the Cathedral of the Woods. Their outfits popped against the orange and yellow fall leaves. I liked doing their more formal looks first. By the time they’d gotten comfortable in front of the camera, they were ready to change into their more casual outfits that allowed for more movement.
Bridget and Kyle kept to the palette of greens, browns, and whites for their next outfits. We headed down to the lakeshore where the golden light reflected off the water. These pictures feel as warm and joyful as Bridget and Kyle’s relationship.
I loved photographing this engagement session at Medford Lakes in the fall. The colors are an absolute dream. Every time we looked in a different direction, we saw something new to enjoy.
What would a visit to Medford Lakes be without a canoe ride? Bridget and Kyle rented a canoe and took to the water. With the vibrant fall leaves and little lake houses in the background, the boat made the engagement photos extra romantic. There’s a timelessness to something like canoeing. It’s so disconnected from electronics and trends. Bridget and Kyle could just be present with each other for this part of the session.
They took a few turns around the lake in the golden light. There weren’t a lot of people around. It added to the feeling that Bridget and Kyle were in their own world. In these photos, you can see how content they are together.
Once they got back to shore, Bridget and Kyle were up for some posed photos with the canoe. They cuddled in the prow (always a feat in a wobbly canoe). Then Bridget and Kyle sat in the sand alongside the boat. The photos of them looking out over the water are really peaceful and inviting. Even in these, they can’t help but smile together.
I would love to come back to Medford Lakes to do another engagement session. This spot is popular in the summer, and it’s easy to see why. The fall has a lot to offer, though. It’s a great spot for outdoorsy couples who don’t want to travel too far afield for their engagement photos. The ready access to canoes is a big bonus!
